Sinibaldo Scorza was a Genoese painter who specialized in still-life and animal pictures. At least two of his surviving sketchbooks are filled with animal studies for engravings. Several drawings of dead birds reveal his interest in anatomy. In this watercolour a dead spotted woodpecker is treated as a colourful and highly finished still-life.
