Label Text

A fervent advocate of drawing from nature, Constable likely found and studied his subject in the environs of his native Suffolk. He applied the wash with a dry brush, allowing the grain of the paper to show through and add texture to the foliage. The strip of pale wash at the lower edge was added later, to anchor the tree in a landscape, but the sheet remains essentially a portrait of an individual tree.
