Inscription: Recto: upper edge, grey ink, artist’s hand: "The ex-Emperor on the occasion of his fete day received at Chislehurst telegrams from the Prince of Wales, the Emperors of Russia and Austria, / the King of Portugal, the King of Sweden, the Queen of Holland and the Prince of Hohenzollern - Sigmaringen, also 1000 letters, 300 despatches, an address signed by 6000 / business men of Paris, besides various presents of flowers +c. 'Paris newspaper.'"; lower right (within drawing), grey ink: "The Ex-Emperor."; lower centre, grey ink, dated by artist: "The Fete Napoleon at Chislehurst Augst - 1871. / "If you please your ex-Imperial Majesty here's some more Telegrams and 'Dresses come / and Missus says you'd better read em afore you go to bed. It'll do yer Rheumatis good."".
