Label Text

Vincent van der Vinne belonged to a family of artists working in the Dutch city of Haarlem. His skill at describing tones and textures may well have been acquired through studying with Frans Hals. The painterly handling of this small wrinkled toad gives it a more lifelike appearance than the precisely-drawn and scientifically accurate grasshopper by a contemporary artist, also in the Courtauld collection (D.1952.RW.2081).

Dr Alfred Scharf, London (1900-1965); purchased from him by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), n.d.; Witt Bequest 1952
