Inscription: Recto: lower left corner, graphite, signed or just an attribution? "T. Lawrence" and beside it, dated in a different graphite: "London 1808" [according to notes in the file the name has been written over an erased inscription but this is not evident from examination of the drawing.] Canvas support (historic), Verso: centre, graphite, cannot read because of dark paper and weave of canvas, several further lines evident under UV but still illegible: "Mrs [illegible] / Mr S[...] / [...]"; centre, green chalk: "2 / 1". Mount (removed, see photo), Recto: lower left, graphite: "Exhib. Arts Council. 1948/9"; lower right, graphite: "Joseph Slater / op 1806 - m 1847. / or / Sir Thomas Lawrence / 1769-1830 / signed or inscribed T Lawrence. London / 1808 / Portrait of Mrs Siddons/ at age of 43. / gave farewell performance as Lady Macbeth / in 1812.".
