Inscription: Mount (removed, in portfolio from P&D), Recto: upper right, graphite, Duke’s inv. no.: "D957/85"; Verso: centre, graphite: “By James Seymour 1702-1752 / This is one of a collection of Seymour’s drawings studied by Walter Shaw Sparrow Esq in the “Field” of 30th April 1925. / James Dallaway (1826), the historian of Sussex, found the drawings in the collection of J. Hawkins Esq. at Bignor Park, Sussex. / On the death of Mrs. Heywood Johnstone of Bignor Park the collection was rediscovered at an old house belonging to her at / Pulborough and was sold by order of her executors at Christie’s, 20th February, 1928." [the sale at Christie’s was in 1925, not 1928 as inscribed here].
