This confident exploratory drawing portrays the relationship between architecture and the landscape as organic and unified. The prominence of vegetation and water, as well as the presence of human and animal life, suggests the notion of regeneration. Often associated with ruins in Asselyn’s designs are the long triangular clusters of hanging creeper, which cling to the architecture from which they sprout. The bridge with sagging arches is perhaps an imaginary structure based on the Ponte Molle in Rome.
