Notes
This double-sided study of angels carrying the cross and other instruments of the Passion is for an unexecuted pendentive, produced by La Fosse while developing his scheme for the decoration of the cupola of the church of Les Invalides, Paris. The two angels on the recto were incorporated, however, into the frescoed cupola where they support the column of the Flagellation (we are grateful to Jennifer Tonkovich for this information).
Provenance
possibly Pierre Crozat, Paris (1661-1740); possibly his estate sale, Mariette (Paris), 10 April - 13 May 1741, lot 1051 (as 'Quatorze dessins, Études pour les peintures du dôme de l'église des Invalides'); Pierre-Jean Mariette, Paris (1694-1774), L.1852; his estate sale, Basan (Paris), 15 November 1775 - 30 January 1776, lot 1250 (as 'Huit sujets et esquisses diverses, à la sanguine et pierre noire...'); purchased there by either the Baron Delunes (?) or by Basan (Paris); F. Stanton (?); purchased from him by Colnaghi (London), 15 May 1935; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, 21 December 1943 (£4); Witt Bequest 1952
