Inscription: Verso: upper centre, grey ink: "The Idler_ / There are Mortals whose life is certainly not active / for they do neither nor evil, but rise in the morning / look round them till night in careless stupidity, / go to bed + sleep, and rise again in the morning, / On what can that Animal be supposed to be thinking- / No Man is insensible of the value + knowledge of the / advantages of Health, or the convenience of Plenty, / but every day shows us those on whom the conviction is without effect_"; lower centre, graphite: erased, now completely illegible Support (removed, see photo), Recto: written twice at lower right, graphite: "T.O.". Mount (removed, see photo), Recto: lower right, graphite: "Thomas Rowlandson / 1751-1827 / 'The Idler' (with inscription)".
