Label Text

This is a design for a painting to decorate the wall of a room; Devoto worked both as a painter of stage scenery and as a decorative painter in private houses. A finished drawing with a Latin signature, it would appear to have been made for presentation to a patron, either as a plan of a future project, or a record of a finished one.

Provenance

Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (Edith?); acquired from her in an exchange by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, possibly in 1943 (according to note in file, but no evidence given); Witt Bequest 1952 See Long Description.
