Whistler and his wife stayed in the small town of Loches during their honeymoon in France in the summer of 1888. Street scenes were a common subject for the artist at this time, as was his use of a narrow vertical format and pale, freely handled washes. Here he focuses on the picturesque buildings at the far end of the street, leaving large areas of the paper empty. A blur of watery grey-blue wash in the foreground suggests a figure captured in motion.
