Painter, sculptor, decorator and architectural designer, Alfred Stevens was one of the most accomplished draughtsmen of his age. With its subtle tonal effects and expressive twisting of the body, this red chalk study reveals his knowledge of Renaissance drawing techniques. The secondary sketch of the same figure viewed from the side suggests that this may be a three-dimensional design for sculpture, though none is known of this subject.

Provenance

possibly the artist's assistant, James Gamble (1835-1911); probably Alfred Drury (1856-1944); his sale, Leicester Galleries (London), March - April 1946, possibly lot 51; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b (verso, lower left); Witt Bequest 1952
