Inscription: Separate sheet of paper (a former support?), now in object file: brown ink: "The Portrait of / William Hayley Esqr / by / Romney / was done on purpose for Miss Seward and / was presented to me 26 April. 1809 by / Thomas White Esqr. of Lichfield. / Archibald Constable". Backboard of frame (removed and in object file): brown ink, the last numbers in graphite: "This / Portrait of / William Hayley Esqr. / by / Romney- / was done on purpose for / Miss Seward, and was / presented to me 26 April / 1809. by Thomas White Esqr / of Lichfield / Archibald Constable / 66".
Collector's mark: Removed from lower verso (backing sheet) and glued to current support: stamped in black: Sir Robert Witt (L.2228b).
