Giandomenico Tiepolo’s mature style is characterised by marvellous inventions and tender, straightforward narrative. Here, he has placed the dead body of Christ at the centre of a sombre scene of mourning, surrounded by his grieving followers. His mother cradles his body in her lap, with Mary Magdalene crouching at his feet. In the left foreground, the Roman soldier, Longinus, who pierced Christ’s side with his spear, sits and weeps. In contrast, on the right, a Roman soldier seemingly stumbles, at a full gallop, into this epic moment. As he pulls his speeding charger up short, a sense of truncated movement is evoked.
