Robert Adam drew a series of imaginary landscape compositions such as this during the last fifteen years of his life. As his architectural practice grew, and necessarily became increasingly standardised, such fantasy drawings provided Adam with a means of private recreation; they were never exhibited.
Notes
A drawing with a similar castle, dated 1782, is in the Soane Museum (reproduced in The Architectural Review, January 1925, pl. III), titled 'Romantic Composition' and dated 1782.
