Label Text

Rowlandson received a conventional artist's training, entering the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 15, and exhibiting there regularly from 1775 to 1787. His facility for drawing had by then developed fully and was to remain consistent throughout his career, making it difficult to date this drawing with confidence. An accomplished social satirist, Rowlandson has here recorded a fleeting incident with his customary ability to see the absurd in the commonplace.
