Label Text

Drawn on costly vellum, this large, elaborate landscape was probably made for a collector. The majestic tree in the foreground has been rendered with exceptionally varied penwork, its twisted trunk and feathery foliage built up with layers of fine detail. Little is known of de Cock and only a handful of works can be securely attributed to him. His treatment of the woodland at left suggests a familiarity with the work of Gillis van Coninxloo, an important forest painter of the previous generation.
