Provenance
sale of the artist's studio, L.368b (lower left), Christie's (London), 26 - 27 June 1899, probably lot 5 (with 2 others); purchased there (if lot 5) by Stevenson (?); Spencer (London); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b (lower left), n.d.; Witt Bequest 1952 The 1899 catalogue lists one of the drawings in lot 5 as ‘Jarrow’, but it is under the category of pencil drawings, when our drawing also has watercolour. There are other lots with unspecific names in the watercolour categories that this drawing could have been in, but only lot 5 specifically mentions a drawing of Jarrow.
