This portrait of Philippe d’Orléans (1674-1723), Regent of France, depicts the duke as a military hero wearing the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit; he had distinguished himself in battle during the War of Spanish Succession. Parrocel, who specialised in military scenes, likely made this drawing upon his return to France from several years in Rome. The oval format and highly finished execution suggest that he intended it as an independent work.
