Provenance
August Grahl, Dresden (1791-1868); possibly his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 27 - 28 April 1885, lot 104 (as 'Florentine School'); if so, purchased there by Herbage; Goldschmidt; Licht; Albert Köster (1862-1924); his estate sale, C.G. Boerner (Leipzig), 13 November 1924, lot 37; Henry Oppenheimer, London (1859-1932); his estate sale, Christie's (London), 13 July 1936, lot 203 (with 4 others); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), for £4.4 (Witt's valuation on his index card, out of the 11 guineas, or £11.55 spent on the whole lot); Witt Bequest 1952
In the annotated Grahl catalogue in CABS, this lot was described as ‘Florentine School, Virgin and child and two saints, sepia, heightened with white, h. 17.6, w. 18.8, bt. Herbage’ – 17.6 matches, but 18.8 doesn’t, and odd they didn’t identify the easily identifiable saints when they did elsewhere.
