A native of the Swiss town of Schaffhausen, Daniel Lindtmayer was a prolific designer of stained glass. After having attempted to kill a local goldsmith he was declared insane in 1595 and left his hometown. This fantastical drawing depicting three staggered arches decorated with terms – half figures, half pillars – and scrollwork resembles heraldic glass painting. It was, however, probably neither preparatory for such ornaments nor for actual architectural motifs but instead for interior wall decoration, possibly the murals of the Schwyz city hall.
Notes
Friedrich Thone 1975 identified a series of 5 extant drawings to which this belongs (including one in the Kupferstichkabinett, Basel and in the National Gallery of Canada) which he says were likely executed on commission for painted decorations in an interior room.
