Label Text

This drawing is one in a series of eleven illustrating the life of Don Juan of Austria, the illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V, who served as captain of a military unit in the Spanish army. The inscription refers to his soldiers' thirst for violence, even when not engaged in battle, as they are shown battling in a tournament. The squaring indicates it may have been preparatory for a large-scale painting or tapestry, though none is known.
