The square format of this drawing plunges the viewer into the understory of a wood with its thick crowns of foliage and deep shadows. Coninxloo’s energetic penwork conveys a sense of movement, as if the trees were tossed by a strong breeze. In the last two decades of his career Coninxloo turned from purely imaginary landscapes to a closer study of nature that would strongly influence seventeenth-century Dutch forest painting.
