Three ‘first ideas’ (primi pensieri) for a painting of the 'Finding of Moses' are combined here with other figures. This shows Rosa's practice of working simultaneously at more than one composition. Following Pharaoh's order to kill every male child born to the Israelites in Egypt, Moses's mother saved her son by placing him in a basket, which she cast into the river. Moses was rescued by the servants of Pharaoh's daughter, as is depicted in the sketch at the upper left of the sheet.
