In 1573, after a prolonged stay in Italy, Christoph Schwarz became the city painter of Munich and a leading court artist to its Catholic dukes. In the 1580s he was commissioned to execute the high altarpiece for the newly founded Jesuit church of St. Michael, the spiritual centre of the Counter Reformation in Germany. The success of the painting, showing St. Michael’s battle against the fallen angels, is documented in several variations by Schwarz, one of which is the Last Judgment depicted in this drawing.
