Inscriptions

Watermark: Watermarks: centre: difficult to decipher – triangular lines connected to a vertical line ending in a three-lobed flower (nothing similar in Heawood). Support (historic): lower centre edge, fragment of a shape – unable to decipher.

Inscription: Recto: lower centre (within the drawing), brown ink: “A.Z.IN:”; lower left corner, brown ink, Joseph Smith's hand and initials: “no. 2. / JS.”. Verso (hidden by support, visible via transmitted light): lower left corner, ink: “3”. Support (historic), Recto: lower centre, graphite (written under an erased inscription): “77”; lower right, graphite, erased and hard to read: “Zabarelli (Adriano) Palladino 1610-1680 […]”. Support (historic), Verso: centre, brown ink: “no. 9” [?]; lower right, graphite, circled: “J.896.”; lower right corner, graphite: “3” and “11”.

Collector's mark: Recto: right lower edge, all stamped in black ink: William Bateson (L.2604a); unidentified collector (L.474); Thomas Banks (L.2423) [this stamp partly on the drawing and partly on the support]. Support (historic), Verso: upper left edge, pen and brown ink, cut off: Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d’Argenville (L.2951)? “22638” followed by a paraph (does not exactly match the paraph as published by Lugt); lower right corner, stamped in black ink: Ambrose Poynter (L.161).
