Pierre-Jean Mariette, Paris (1694-1774), L.1852; possibly his estate sale, Basan (Paris), 15 November 1775 – 30 January 1776, lots 267, 268 or 271; if lot 267, purchased there by Lachey for 36 livres; if lot 268, purchased there by Jean-Denis Lempereur, Paris (1701-1779); if lot 271, purchased there by either Basan (Paris) or Fauver; if purchased by Lachey [as Rosenberg 2019 believed likely], possibly in his sale, Paris, 3 December 1793, possibly lot 35 (under Caravaggio, 'sujet d'Enfans qui assiègent un fort, composition de plus de douze figures à la plume, lavé d’encre de la Chine, rehaussé de blanc', did not cite Mariette provenance); E. Parsons & Sons (London); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, n.d., for 28 shillings; Witt Bequest 1952
