This drawing, one of many Sandrart made for engraved plates, illustrates a scene from a patriotic political novel by Daniel Casper von Lohenstein (1635-1683) in which primitive Germans are favourably contrasted with the corrupt, civilized Romans. The book describes the exploits of Hermann, formerly known as Arminius, who, on returning to his homeland after long service as a Roman officer, led a successful revolt against the Roman forces and was declared a national hero. In this scene, the priest Libys points to a statue of Drusus, while German warriors set about its destruction - possibly an allusion to the assault on the Catholic Church during the Reformation.
