This unusual drawing is closely related in subject matter and format to a drawing in the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery (A Risky Position, 1843). Cox was by then enjoying greater freedom, having left London and retired from his teaching practice. The chalk in this almost impressionistic sketch appears to have been applied mixed with water and thickening medium before being manipulated with a flat blade. Highlights have been scratched into the surface.

Provenance

by descent to Hannah Cox (1840-1909), granddaughter of the artist; sold by her to Walker Galleries (London), 1904 (see her letter in file for D.1952.RW.1432); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), n.d.; Witt Bequest 1952
