These small drawings, probably intended as models for educational playing cards, display the illustrious ancient heroes Hector, Joshua, David, Judas Maccabeus, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, King Arthur of England, Charlemagne, and Godefroy de Bouillon. This group of Nine Worthies is expanded with modern characters: Emperors Charles V and Leopold I, King John III of Poland, and Charles, Duke of Lorraine – the latter being three key figures in the Siege of Vienna of 1683, when the Austrian city repelled a major Ottoman offensive.

Provenance

Sir William Stirling Maxwell, London (1818-1878); by descent to his son, Sir John Stirling Maxwell, Glasgow (1866-1956); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 15 - 16 February 1921, lot 249; presumably purchased there by E. Parsons & Sons (London); their sale, cat. 38, 1921, lot 410 (£3.15 for all, as by Valdés); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt (1875-1952); Witt Bequest 1952
