In the 'Metamorphoses', Ovid describes Vulcan's skill in forging metals. Incensed at finding his wife, Venus, 'close bound together' with the god Mars, Vulcan forges a net of finely worked bronze chains in which he traps the pair and displays them to the ridicule of the gods. Cambiaso's drawing shows Vulcan and his assistants at work in the forge, whilst through the open door to the right, we are given a glimpse of the illicit love-making of Venus and Mars. Vulcan's mastery of the element of fire is central to his identity as a god; fire here becomes an image of god-like creativity.
