In 1871 the influential critic John Ruskin appointed Alexander Macdonald as Master of his Drawing School at Oxford. In the spring of 1884 he employed the artist to make studies of some semi-precious stones from his collection of over 3,000 mineral specimens at his Lake District home, Brantwood.

This carefully observed drawing, previously attributed to Ruskin, is most probably one of this group. The opal itself was sold in 1924 to the British Museum by Ruskin’s cousin and closest relative, Joan Severn.

Provenance

commissioned from the artist by John Ruskin (1819-1900); given by him to Mr George Allen (1832-1907); Joan Severn (1846-1924) (cousin and heir to Ruskin) and her husband Joseph Arthur Palliser Severn (1842-1931); his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 20 May 1931, lot 93 (with D.1952.RW.2468.1, 2468.2, 2469.1 and 2469.2); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952); Witt Bequest 1952
