The evangelist is shown standing in a niche, accompanied by the lion with which he is usually associated. The open book alludes to his Gospel. Blue paper provides a mid tone; carefully applied brown wash and white bodycolour delineate the folds of the saint's robe, and hatching in pen and ink, reinforced with further brown washes, indicate the recess which frames the figure.
