Provenance

probably Joshua Kirby (1716-1774); given by him to Joshua Baldreys (1754-1828), December 1776 [based on verso inscription, possibly the date remembered incorrectly, or was a bequest?]; Frank Gibson (1865-1931?); T.P. Greig; his sale, Christie's (London), 11 May 1928, lot 6, as 'Study for the Great Cornard Wood'; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952); Witt Bequest 1952 Inscription on the verso: "Josa. Baldgreys given Me Decr. 1776 by J: K: Senr. Gent". I am presuming JK to be Joshua Kirby, a great friend of Gainsborough’s; he died before 1776 though, so the date in the inscription is the not the gift date, but just the inscription date probably; Joshua Baldreys’s father, Andrew Baldrey, was partners with Joshua Kirby’s father, John Kirby.
