One of the most popular artists of his generation, Landseer was celebrated for his lifelike paintings of animals. This naturalistic drawing in three colours of chalk was most probably made in preparation for the monumental sculpted lions at the base of Nelson’s column in Trafalgar Square, London, which were unveiled in January 1867 to great acclaim. The image was possibly produced from a sketch made on one of the artist’s regular trips to London’s Zoological Gardens to study lions from life.
