Label Text

Trouville was a fashionable seaside resort on the Normandy coast. In this charming watercolour, Boudin quickly renders five figures sitting on the beach. With a single line of graphite for the horizon, he uses the blue paper to stand in for both the water and sky. Slightly off-centre but roughly within the same plane, the group underscores the immense expanse of the sea, while the delicate drawing imparts a pleasant, quiet feeling.

Notes

This was not made as a direct preparatory study for any painted motif, but was a stock recording of variations in groupings, poses and fashions to which the artist could refer.
