This drawing is one of a large group of studies by John of his partner Dorelia, some of which show her wearing a gypsy dress with a voluminous skirt. John saw himself as an inheritor of the "great Tradition" of line drawings as oppose to what he termed "stumping" (drawing with chalk dust applied with rolled up paper). John wrote of his admiration for the "method of rendering human form by a succession of rhythmical lines following the surface and explaining the structure" that he had been taught as a student.
