The exuberant calligraphy of rounded shapes and squiggles on this sheet depicting a female figure – probably Venus – surrounded by putti differs from the more angular shorthand of Alonso Cano, to whom it was once attributed. The more likely draughtsman is Vicente Salvador Gómez. After acquiring Cano’s library, with albums of prints and drawings as well as plaster casts, his work became closely linked to Cano’s dynamic pen work. The unusually large format of this expressive sketch allows for ambitious study of the foreshortening of the Christ Child’s body. Salvador Gómez was active in the art academy established about 1660–65 in Valencia and compiled a pattern book for drawing anatomy and perspective, an interest also evident in this drawing.
