Provenance

given by the artist to George Capel-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex, Cassiobury House (1757-1839); Cassiobury House sale, Hodgson & Co (London), 22 - 24 November 1922, possibly lot 88 (as a volume of 18 drawings, including D.1952.RW.1216, 1217, 1217.1, 1220, 1223, 1224 and 2294); purchased there by Palser Gallery (London); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b (lower left) n.d. (£1); Witt Bequest 1952 As RW.2293 and 2294 are at a remove from the other Monro drawings Witt purchased from Palser, it is not a sure thing that they also came from lot 88 at the Cassiobury House sale, especially as the price paid for each of those in lot 88 was 8 shillings, while 2293 and 2994 each cost £1. 2293 and 2294 also are laid down on the same paper supports, which differ from the other drawings still laid down on their mounts.
