Inscription: Mount (historic), Recto: on a separate strip of card taped to the upper edge, brown ink, the central statement written first and the two flanking ones squeezed to fit so that the ink has run: “The finished Drawings of / Sr James are very uncommon”, “Sr James Thornhill, Study for & Executed by himself, in one of the Divisions in the Dome of St: Pauls”, “The figure in the Cap is his own Portrait / [illegible]”; in the same hand on the lower centre edge, brown ink: “Cavalier Giacomo Thornhill, Inglese, disegno Originale per il Quadro da lui depinta nel’ so: Paolo in Londra”.
Collector's mark: Recto: lower right corner, blindstamped: Benjamin West (L.419). Mount (historic), Recto: lower left corner, stamped in black: Sir Robert Witt (L.2228b).
