This watercolour copies a scene representing Night from Hendrick Goltzius’s print series, The Four Times of the Day. Rather than using traditional nude allegorical figures, it features people in contemporary dress. The colours provide striking contrasts not present in the original black and white print, creating a more pronounced separation between the sleeping figure in the foreground, highlighted in purple and red, and the couple in the background beneath the canopy washed in a bluish-grey tone.
