From 2023 display Art and Artifice: Fakes from the Collection:
This seascape appeared in the sale of Isabel Constable’s property as a genuine work by her father, British artist John Constable. Technical analysis of the paper has now revealed that it dates from the 1840s, after Constable’s death. It seems most likely to have been made by one of Constable’s sons. Later documents reveal the pressure that Constable’s heirs were put under by dealers to certify that works in their possession were by their illustrious forebear John, as was probably the case of the present work.

Provenance

by descent to the artist's sister, Isabel Constable, London (1822-1888); her estate sale, Christie's (London), 17 June 1892; purchased there by Leggatt Bros (London) [according to Witt's index card; purchased as by John Constable] and therefore probably lot 132 or 136; Galerie Hansen (Lucerne); offered by them on commission to Galerie Heinemann (Munich), 10 November 1925; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, 21 August 1926 (£10, as by John Constable); Witt Bequest 1952 See the digitisation of Heinemann's records: http://heinemann.gnm.de/en/artwork-2021.htm.
