This large drawing shows a gentle valley and groups of peasants with carriages and cattle moving along a winding path. Two travellers at the roadside watch this scene. They represent the urban viewers who collected elaborately executed drawings such as this. The red chalk medium adds a painterly quality to the work. This is further enhanced by the use of white chalk to create light effects, made even more effective by the grey paper support.
