(Exhibited with D.1952.RW.3121):
The Witt Collection contains a significant group of drawings by Stefano, most of which depict genre scenes and groups of soldiers. These two works, with their fine pen lines and careful hatching, are similar in manner to his etchings: the drawing Soldiers playing cards is a study for figures in one of a series of etchings entitled Desseins de quelques conduites de troupes.

Notes

See The Courtauld's impression of an etching incorporating this group of figures (G.1990.WL.957), Plate 9 in the series Desseins de quelques conduites de troupes, Canons, et ataques de villes (de Vesme 254).

Provenance

Thomas Cholmondeley, 1st Baron Delamere (1767-1855); his estate sale, Sotheby’s (London), 13 - 14 April 1926, lot 365; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b; Witt Bequest 1952
