This drawing was made in preparation for an engraving entitled 'Maning Hawks', illustrating Richard Blome's 'Gentleman's Recreation', first published in 1686. It shows, in the background, dogs being used to flush out birds such as partridges or pigeons, and, in the foreground, a hawk with its kill. Manuals such as this taught the English gentry and aristocracy to exploit the element of air through the mastery of hunting animals such as dogs and birds of prey.
