Label Text

The castle in the middle distance, with its delicate towers, has not been identified. It is probable that the artist invented both the building and its surroundings, from the craggy rocks in the foreground to the bends of the river flowing toward the horizon. The summarily drawn figures in the foreground animate the scene, but at least one of them – the man on horseback – seems to have been added as an afterthought.
