The attribution of this drawing to Hans Hausser, whose life is undocumented, is based on a signed painting in Munich, which shows an almost identical composition. Two scenes of the Passion are combined: in the foreground Christ is presented to the people who clamour for his crucifixion. In the distance at the right he carries the Cross. Extreme sketchiness, unusually abbreviated main characters and caricature-like rendering of minor figures give the work a modern appearance.

Provenance

possibly Pierre Crozat, Paris (1661-1740); possibly Alexandre-Pierre-François Robert-Dumesnil, Paris (1778-1864) [though not listed in his 1838 sale catalogue]; Spencer (London); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, n.d.; Witt Bequest 1952
