This is one of a number of drawings related to the Augsburg artist Kager, which are linked to an engraving of the same subject. The use of colour suggests it was intended as a finished work, executed on the basis of the print, which served as a workshop model. The figures on the right, clearly indebted to Italian art, direct the viewer to the main scene of Christ’s baptism, while their gestures are intended to inspire devotion.
