This roundel belongs to a group of similarly formatted studies executed in pen and ink and wash depicting historical subjects, including three in the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lille, and four recently on the art market. These sheets may date to the end of his career, ca. 1770-77.

Inscriptions

Watermark: Watermark: Verso, left centre edge, fragment: lower half of a shield with a bend, above monogram "VDL" (matches Churchill 433 - dated 1724).

Inscription: Verso: left centre, graphite: "Light Brown border".

Collector's mark: Recto: lower right corner, stamped in black ink: John Bouverie (L.325). Verso: lower right corner, stamped in black ink: Sir Robert Witt (L.2228b).
