Notes

This is a preparatory figure study for Van Dyck’s Carrying of the Cross, painted when the artist was just 18 years old. The painting was the ninth in a series of the ‘Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary’, a selection of Biblical events in the life of the Virgin Mary. The series was commissioned for Saint Paul’s Church in Antwerp from numerous leading artists of the city, including Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, and David Teniers, and all of the paintings remain there to this day. This drawing is a study for the figure of the executioner who leans over Christ in the centre of the composition, dragging him upwards as he yields under the cross. Van Dyck concentrates on working out the positioning of the figure’s outstretched right arm; the second iteration from the left was used in the final painting. Seven preparatory sketches for this project still survive, more than for any of the artist’s other works.
